The Church
When Archdeacon William Coxe, the author of 'An Historical Tour of Monmouthshire' (1801) visited Trostrey in 1799 he recorded of the church that its 'situation is extremely wild and romantic; it stands ... remote from any inhabitation, and seems rather the solitary chapel of a hermit, than the church of a cultivated district'.
Built about 1300 or just after, St. David's has undergone two major rebuildings, the first probably about 1500 and the second in 1876/7. The evidence for these is still to be seen in the church.
The churchyard is 2.2 acres in extent, an area which is perhaps significantly similar to the area of land assiciated with the hermitage in 1160. West of the church is a modern cross of machine cut stone standing upon a much older, stepped base, some of the treads of which are carved. What may have been the roughly carved stone socket of the former cross has been placed in the porch.
