PETERSTON-SUPER-ELY

Site Home Page

Peterston-super-ely, a village 7 miles west of Cardiff, pleasantly situated on the Ely river. The ancient church of St. Peter is built in the gothic style with chancel, nave, south porch, and embattled western tower which is buttressed at each angle throughout almost its entire height; and its staircase is contained in the wall of the chancel arch and shares with the old church of St. Catwg of Cadoxton-juxta-Barry, the unusual feature of having this entrance placed on the south side of the building. On the left of the altar which, which has a modern reredos, is a very large niche which at one time probably held a statue; its concave surface is now covered by a painting of the Madonna and Child. The tall wooden canaopy of the old octagonal font now rests in this niche. The silver chalice of the church bears the date 1576.
